The legend of Mississippi’s “three-legged lady” isn’t for the faint of heart

Of all the ghost stories, urban legends, and folklore associated with Mississippi, the legend of the Three-Legged Lady is by far one of the creepiest. For years, locals have told the story of the phantom woman and the lonely stretch of road she haunts.

According to legend, the Three-Legged Lady haunts Nash Road, which is not far from the lock and dam in Columbus, Mississippi. Locals report that most sightings take place between 2661-4548 Nash Road. But the Three-Legged Lady doesn’t just haunt the area; she torments drivers by chasing their cars down the dark roadway.

Some believe the hauntings can be traced back to an old church that was once located on Nash Road. It has been said that when the church was no longer in use, a satanic cult began using it for human sacrifices.

As the story goes, motorists who want to see the Three-Legged Lady should stop on Nash Road, turn off the headlights, and honk the horn three times. After doing so, the Three-Legged Lady knocks on the roof of the car and then races the driver to the end of the road, hitting the car with her body the entire time.

Being chased by anyone is scary enough, but when it’s a ghost with three legs ― one of which seems to be rotting and sewn to her body ― it’s downright frightening. There are several stories about the Three-Legged Lady and how she ended up with an extra limb:

Some say the third leg was removed from a dead lover and attached to her body. Others say the Three-Legged Lady is actually the ghost of a mother, searching for her dismembered daughter. In this case, the third leg is all the mother found of her daughter. Still, others think the phantom is a result of a satanic cult that once performed sacrifices in a nearby church.
