If there is one thing we can be certain of when it comes to archaeology and history, it is that we have no clue how many discoveries are still to be made. Small findings that challenge orthodox historians are slowly but steadily rewriting modern history. What we believed was outlandish or unthinkable a century ago is now an irrefutable fact.
Everything evolves, and as society progresses, so does our curiosity, which is fed by our intuition, which tells us there is more to our past than we are taught. One such finding, albeit widely contested, was made in Portugal when news reports suggested a large submerged pyramid had been discovered close off the Azores islands of So Miguel and Terceira.
The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands located over a thousand kilometers from Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. Surprisingly, the submerged structure is placed exactly where Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, said Atlantis was. According to Plato’s dialogues, Atlantis was situated on an island in the Atlantic Pelagos “Atlantic Sea” “in front of” the Pillars of Hercules. That is where the Azores are located.
“Through violent earthquakes and floods, in a single day and night of misfortune … [the whole race] … was swallowed up by the Earth and the island of Atlantis … disappeared into the depths of the sea.” – Plato.
Surprisingly, Plato represented Atlantis as being consumed by the sea in a single day in his stories. Strangely, the Azores are situated along the fault lines that connect the North American, Eurasian, and African tectonic plates. Talk about the possibility of a shaky foundation beneath your feet.
The enigmatic underwater edifice discovered beneath the sea is said to be a square pyramid properly arranged by its cardinal points. The construction, according to researchers, has been submerged for at least 20,000 years, or during the last ice age, when our planet’s glaciers were melting.
According to Portuguese press sources, Diocleciano Silva was the first to uncover the underwater pyramid. According to preliminary estimates, the structure would stand at least 60 meters tall and cover an area of 8000 square meters.
Silva is reported to have found the Pyramid while on a fishing excursion when he came across the submerged pyramid while utilizing bathymetric equipment on board his ship (Bathymetry is the study of underwater depth of lake or ocean bottoms). Bathymetry, in other words, is the underwater analog of hypsometry or topography.
But not everyone believes it’s a submerged pyramid. Skeptics believe that we may be looking at an underwater volcanic hill rather than the relics of an antediluvian society. Speaking to Diário Insular, Silva said: “the pyramid is perfectly shaped and apparently oriented by the cardinal points.”
